Our History: Over 60 Years of Horsemanship

Founded in 1959 in Cedaredge, Colorado, the club was started by a spirited group of women who initially formed a horseback drill team to perform during the Cowboy Polo half-time shows. This early enthusiasm quickly led to the formation of the Ladies of the Surface Creek Saddle Club.

An Evolving Heritage: As the Cowboy Polo group began focusing on arena events like gymkhanas and the Little Britches Rodeo (where our members proudly ran the concession stand for decades), the ladies’ group evolved into the Women’s Surface Creek Saddle Club (WSCSC)—an independent club focused on trail riding and parades.

WSCSC organized competitive trail events on the Grand Mesa, as well as Trail Trials on the Escalante. These competitions drew riders from all over Colorado, New Mexico, and even as far away as Texas.

Facelift and Modern Focus: To meet the challenges of the pandemic, the club underwent a significant “facelift” in 2022. This revitalization introduced a dynamic schedule of new trail rides, overnight campouts, social events, and educational programs. A key part of this shift was the development of our Trail Difficulty Rating System, which uses familiar ski trail identification (Green, Blue, and Black) to match riders with appropriate trails across Delta, Montrose, and Mesa counties.

WSCSC recently became a nonprofit and incorporated. This transition has provided new avenues for the club to collaborate, educate, and effect positive change in our community. New for 2026 is our Multi-Use Trail Safety and Education Initiative.

What has remained unchanged for over 60 years is our core: a profound love for our horses, a dedication to great food, and the laughter shared at every gathering.
