It was so wonderful to look around the Round Corral on Saturday, June 6th, and feel so incredibly proud to be a member of the Women’s Surface Creek Saddle Club. We had an amazing crowd of club members, family, the U.S. Forest Service, and Western Slope Outdoor Alliance (WSOA), Thunder Mountain Wheelers, Colorado West Land Trust all show up to celebrate, connect, and give back to the trails we love.
In addition to National Trail Day, WSCSC was thrilled to celebrate our new Multi-Use Trail Signs! Created by the club’s Trail Safety and Education Committee and funded by a grant secured by the Western Slope Outdoor Alliance, these signs are designed to educate other trail users on exactly what to do when they encounter a horse on the trail. Our ultimate goal? To see these displayed at all trailheads across the GMUG and surrounding BLM areas in the next few years.
Here is a quick recap of the hard work all the volunteers put in:
Trail & Camp Clean-up: Five of our members headed out on horseback to clean up some notoriously messy dispersed campsites. They definitely found some trash left behind by campers! Meanwhile, many other volunteers walked the parking and nearby trail areas to pick up litter. Thankfully it wasn’t too horrible, but it’s great to get it done early in the season!
Corral Fence Repairs: Laura from the USFS brought up a big load of buck and rails to repair the fences at the Round Corral. A huge thank you to Mike from the Thunder Mountain Wheelers for lending a heavy hand, as well as Greg, Rob, Chris, and Megan (WSOA)—with Marty keeping a close eye and giving advice!
Community Support: A special shout-out to Libby from the Colorado West Land Trust, who worked incredibly hard alongside the team all day.
The Best Part—The Food! Huge kudos to all the ladies who baked and brought delicious cookies, and to Weldy for whipping up those amazing breakfast burritos! And of course, what would a WSCSC event be without our signature Root Beer Floats? Thanks Louise for the Root Beer. Someone forgot to bring the Beer, beer!
Thank you to everyone who showed up, worked hard, and made this day such a massive success. Our community and our Public Lands are better because of you!
